Longer (More Sentimental) Version
My high school English teacher and I recently reconnected on social media. As we reminisced about Harper Lee and Shakespeare, Ms. Hill typed, “I remember exactly where you sat in my classroom, Kelli.”
I remember where I sat too: third row from the wall, second seat. That was more than 20 years ago.
Ms. Hill’s English class and the material we learned therein—argumentative writing, Macbeth, proper research methods, critical thinking—would propel my career path. I progressed from high school student to college graduate to Ph.D. candidate to university professor, never taking for granted the skills I learned throughout my English class in small-town Louisiana.
In part because of high school English, I’ve been a writer and educator for more than 13 years. While I have published articles on Chicago architecture and being buried alive, and have edited stories on postfeminism and Elf on the Shelf, my areas of expertise are higher education, film and TV, and humanities.
You may view my publications by topic, by outlet, by date, or enjoy 10 of my favorites.
In my spare time, I run local races (as well as the occasional one back home in Louisiana), renovate my 1924 Chicago bungalow with this guy, and curate Gene Kelly Fans.
I received my B.A. and M.A. in English from the University of Louisiana-Monroe (minors in history and French). I earned the Ph.D. in Humanities from the University of Texas-Dallas.

Recent Publication"Milk and Mythology in Singin’ in the Rain"
I debunk one of the most widely disseminated myths about Singin' in the Rain: that set designers added milk (or ink) to the water so that raindrops would show up on screen. In so doing, I also attempt to locate the milk myth's origin and explain why this falsehood has intensified over the last 20 years. Transformative Works and Cultures, 2017 |
