Colin Firth: Actor, Sex Symbol, Drag Queen

This entry is part 4 of 12 in the series Pic of the Day.

Nope, I'm not going to look up, no matter how many Mamma Mia! jokes you tell.

Today, Colin Firth turns 51. That’s right, folks; the man above is 51 years old. I’m unsure when this particular photo was taken (8-10 years ago?), but if this is what middle age looks like or this, which I know was taken last week, sign me up.

Trying to decide on one photo to represent this “pic of the day” entry is by far the most difficult thing I’ve done all week. Please keep in mind that over the past six days, I set the DVR for the upcoming fall season, watched the documentary Exporting Raymond, and made vegetable soup — in other words, it’s been a strenuous few days.

But seriously, dude is so photogenic it’s hard to select just one pic. For instance, I thought about featuring a recent W Magazine photo shoot in which Firth’s face is painted with a star (bizarrely sexy), this from a 2011 Oscar shoot (debonair Firth!), or this close-up in which the heavens seemingly shine down their approval on the man (why shouldn’t they?!). And for fun, I also contemplated including this photo of Colin riding a taco (no, go ahead and click it; it’s worth your time.). But ultimately, I dig this casual, black-and-white, semi-coy shot above.

I’ve written before about my affection for Colin Firth in conjunction with my love for Gene Kelly, as an introduction to my thoughts on animated gifs and as a reason for surviving the loooong 2011 Academy Awards ceremony. But to date, I’ve not written in depth about him or his star image and why it presumably entices me so: I’m guessing it’s his characters’ withdrawn modesty, prim sexiness, and British accent; also, the things he says about his sex-symbol status (I’m too old for this…), his craft (we’re all drag queens), his wife, his role in the godawful musical Mamma Mia! (2008), and the misunderstood intelligence of Hollywood audiences are incredibly endearing.

I’ll try to go into detail on my fan relationship with Firth one day, but this new series — which I intend to keep relatively short and focused on one image — is not the place. In the meantime, at least you have the picture above on which you may affix your gaze. Happy Birthday, Mr. Firth.

  1. The man is VERY attractive and handsome. I can't say he's hot without getting into trouble though since I'm only 22 years old. The man's first son is my age for pete's sake! (BUT I'll say it anyway….*whispers* he's HOT).
